《 vs Huawei: the mysterious journey of AI chips and Prospect of the U.S.-China Tech Competition》 TSMC
Thanks for the invitation from the Intitum Media(heaadquarted in Singapore), I submitted a relatively lengthy piece(4000 words) for my observations on how the TSMC chips were found in Huawei products and what can we expect next. The article is summarized below and if you are very interested in this article but is stopped from the pay wall of the media, please let me know:
1 Considering TSMC’s strong legal compliance culture and exemplary track record, the most plausible explanation for the presence of TSMC chips in Huawei products is that some intermediary “white glove” company/companies may have acquired TSMC chips first and then transferred them to Huawei.
2 As highlighted in the book “The Economic Weapon: The Rise of Sanctions as a Tool of Modern War” , the effectiveness of Western sanctions on Russia have been undermined by Asian nations(particularly China and India) willing to trade with Russia… Every sanction and restriction order inevitably carries the risk of loopholes in the global supply chain.
3 From the first Trump administration (2016) to Biden(2020), despite differences in approach, there is a strong bipartisan consensus on curbing the development of China’s chip technology.
4 Given the structure of U.S.-China competition unchanged, it is likely that the U.S. will tighten the chip supply chain even further (According to the latest news by Reuters the U.S. already took actions to further prohibit TSMC’s shipment of AI chips to China). Under the circumstances, protecting key technologies and securing talents would be crucial for Taiwan.
